Susan GreenbaumI was born in Ohio and reared in the then-small town of Naples, Florida. In 1963 I attended Principia College in Elsah, Illinois--majoring and graduating in Studio Art and Elementary Education in 1967. There began an almost 40+ year learning experience which has included classes at Washington University in St. Louis, Portland State, Pacific NW College of Art, Portland Community College and many classes with professional local and nationally known painters.
Most recently, I am enjoying experimenting with mixing watercolor, acrylic and collage, as the options for its use are endless. I love being surprised by what happens to the paint sometimes, and then enjoy the challenge of trying to make it work with artistic harmony while keeping the liveliness from which it began. This experimentation has been rewarded by numerous awards and peer recognition. My work is intuitive and comes out of a “conversation” I have with the paper. Each stroke is in response to the whole as created by the previous stroke. I feel that the real excitement is in the painting and creating. If the viewer can experience some of that same joy and appreciation for the medium, all the better! I agree with Henri Matisse (1869-1954) who said:
“A work of art must carry in itself its complete significance and impose it upon the beholder even before he can identify the subject matter…I perceive instantly the sentiment which radiates from it and which is inherent in the composition in every line and color.” |
